The Unspoken Truth: Running a Small Business is a Lot Like Raising Kids

 The early days

As a small business owner, have you ever caught yourself thinking, “This is just like a new baby!”?

Some of you may relate to this, especially if you in the early stages of your business where sleepless nights, the constant worrying and the endless questions of “what’s next?” It’s a wonder that entrepreneurs don’t qualify for “parental leave”.

You need access to finance and resources to get going. There is no room to make costly mistakes as just one wrong move could jeopardize your child, sorry, business.

Scaling up

As your business grows, so do the challenges. You’re no longer just worrying about survival; you’re now juggling multiple priorities. It’s like managing a household of rowdy teenagers – everyone wants attention, and no one wants to do chores. You’re constantly adjusting strategies, refining processes, and making tough decisions.

In your marketing, perhaps you are yourself a marketing guru or maybe you have a small team to help. But you start to realize very quickly that marketing isn’t easy as it appeared. Sure, being the boss helps to speed up decision making, but you also have to bear all the risks.

Similarly to parenting teenagers, there is no one size fits all rule book to follow.

Responsibility

One significant problem is losing sight of the wood for the trees.

In order to make more informed decisions, a diverse group of people outside your marketing bubble could prove to be very helpful. You simply cannot read the label from inside the jar.

Networking and having peer support is highly sought after for this very reason however you don’t necessarily get the opportunity to get onto all to the nitty gritty details needed to answer your questions.

What’s more, face to face, most people just want to be nice to you and may even sugar coat things. You will struggle to get honest feedback.
